Most advice on couples sweaters assumes you want the two-halves-of-one-picture kind, where the joke only works when you stand shoulder to shoulder. Those are funny for about ten minutes and useless the moment one of you goes to get a drink.
A better approach is two separate sweaters that clearly belong together. Each one stands on its own, and the pairing is obvious when you are in the same photo.
Here is how to build one.
Pair by theme, not by picture
The trick is picking two designs that share an idea. The connection reads instantly and neither person is stuck holding half a joke.
Two cryptids and hobbies. Bigfoot Christmas, a Santa-hatted Bigfoot carrying a tree and a beer, next to Christmas Rock Santa. Same silly register, different joke. This is the easiest pairing to pull off and the one most likely to get worn again next year.
Two feral animals. A feral and festive raccoon next to overstimulated opossums. If your relationship has a running joke about which of you is which animal, this one writes itself.
One loud, one straight. One person in Merry Dickmas, the other in something plain and festive. The contrast is the joke. It also solves the common problem where one of you wants to go all out and the other does not.
Two hobbies. Gymerbread and Cool Santa whiskey, or BMX Santa and Western cowboy Santa. Each sweater says something true about the person wearing it, which is why these get kept.
Sizing two people from one cut
Every sweater runs S through 5XL in the same cut. There is no separate men's and women's pattern, so two people ordering the same size get the same garment and it will sit differently on each.
In practice: if one of you wants room through the shoulders, size up one. If one of you wants a closer fit, take your normal size. Between sizes, go larger. A sweater that is slightly roomy reads as comfortable in a photo; slightly tight reads as a mistake.
Order two separate items and pick each size from its own dropdown.
Match the room, together
This matters more for couples than for individuals, because you arrive together and get read as a unit.
If you are going to his work party, both of you stay in the safe tier. One rude sweater next to one polite one still means the couple turned up with a rude sweater.
Read the print, not the product name. Santa's Off Duty sounds harmless and shows Santa giving the middle finger with both hands.
If it is a friends party, go wherever you like. The naughty designs land best when the whole room is in on it.
What to avoid
Anything with a year printed on it. It is a one-season purchase and couples sweaters tend to become a small tradition.
Buying your partner's without knowing their size. Everything is printed to order and personalized items cannot be returned, so a guess that comes back wrong is a real problem. Ask, or buy plain designs and use the returns and size exchange policy.
Two designs in clashing base colours. Two reds or two blacks photograph as a pair. A red and a bright blue photograph as two people who arrived separately.
First Christmas together
If this is the first year, pick designs you would both wear again rather than the loudest thing in the collection. The sweaters that survive to a second December are the ones that are funny because of who is wearing them, not because of how far they go.
Photographing two sweaters
Two printed sweaters in one frame is busier than one, and the usual mistake is standing too far apart. Shoulder to shoulder reads as a pair. A foot of gap reads as two separate outfits that happen to be near each other.
Plain dark bottoms on both of you. If one wears patterned trousers the eye goes there instead of to either sweater.
Shoot before the room fills up. An ugly sweater photograph with six strangers in the background is a photograph of a party, not of the two of you.
If you are adding people next year
Couples become families, and a pair of sweaters is often the first year of something that grows.
Two things make that easier. Pick designs from a theme with several products in it, like the animals or the hobby sweaters, so there is room to add a third without the pairing falling apart. And avoid designs where the joke depends on there being exactly two of you.
Sizes run S through 5XL across the whole range, and there is a youth option on the matching pajama sets rather than the sweaters, which is worth knowing if a small person joins the photo. The matching family pajamas collection covers Youth 6M upward in one print if you want everyone in the same thing.
Ordering and timing
Both sweaters go in the same order, $33.99 each, sizes S through 5XL.
Everything is printed after you buy. Production time comes before shipping time, and December is the busiest stretch of the year for made to order apparel. Check the current production and shipping times and give yourself more room than feels necessary, especially if the sweaters are meant to be opened rather than worn straight away.
Common questions
Do you sell matched pairs as one item? No. Each sweater is a separate item, which is what lets you pair any two designs and pick different sizes.
Is the fit the same for men and women? The cut is unisex. Most men prefer to size up one; most women take their normal size.
What is the largest size? 5XL, on every design.
Can we add our names? Some designs take personalization, others are marked "no personalization" in the title. Check the product page before ordering.
