What to wear with an ugly Christmas sweater

The sweater is the whole outfit. Everything else you put on exists to stay out of its way.

That is the one rule, and most bad ugly sweater outfits break it by adding a second loud thing.

Bottoms: plain, dark, done

Black jeans, dark denim, or black trousers. That is the answer for almost every situation.

The sweater already has a full print running across it. A patterned bottom half turns the outfit into visual noise and the sweater stops reading from across the room, which defeats the point of buying it.

Leggings work if the sweater is long enough to cover the hip. Ours are cut as standard sweatshirts rather than dress length, so check in a mirror before committing.

Shoes by venue

House party: whatever you would normally wear. Trainers are fine.

Bar or restaurant: something you can stand in for three hours, and not white trainers if there is any chance of spilled drink.

Office party: boots or plain leather shoes. The sweater is doing the joke; the shoes are the thing that says you did not roll out of bed.

Layering, and when to skip it

A plain black or white long sleeve under the sweater adds warmth without adding pattern. Anything with a collar sticking out at the neck competes with the design.

Skip the jacket indoors. Half the sweater disappears and you lose the reason you bought it. If you need outerwear to get there, plan to take it off at the door.

Dressing one up

Some parties have a dress code that ugly sweaters are technically allowed to break, and you still want to look like you tried.

Swap jeans for tailored black trousers. Add a belt. Wear proper shoes. The sweater stays exactly as loud as it was, and the rest of the outfit reads deliberate rather than lazy.

This works better with the calmer designs. Meowy Christmas cats and dinosaurs or Christmas Rock Santa dress up fine. The hairy chest Santa suit does not, and no amount of tailoring will change that.

Accessories: pick one, maximum

Santa hat, antlers, or light-up earrings. One of them.

Two accessories plus a printed sweater is where an outfit stops being funny and starts looking like a costume shop exploded. The people who win ugly sweater contests usually have one clean idea, not five.

If there is a contest and you want an edge, an accessory that extends the sweater's joke beats a generic one. Antlers with Bigfoot Christmas is random. A tiny gym towel with Gymerbread is a bit.

Fit matters more than you would think

A sweater that is too tight makes the print stretch across the chest and distorts the design. Too loose and the motifs sag.

Our sweaters run S through 5XL in a unisex cut. Men usually prefer to size up one for room through the shoulders; women generally take their normal size. Between sizes, take the larger one.

For photos

Dark bottoms, plain background if you can pick one, and stand where the light is on your face rather than behind you.

Red and green both go hot under warm indoor lighting. If the photo matters, avoid standing directly under a lamp with a deep red sweater on.

Skirts and dresses

A printed sweater over a plain black skirt works, and it is the easiest way to make the outfit look considered rather than thrown together.

Keep the skirt solid and dark. A midi or pencil shape balances the volume of the sweater better than something full, which competes for the same visual space.

Tights rather than bare legs if the party is anywhere cold, since the sweater stops at the hip and does nothing for you below that.

The sweater-as-dress look does not work with these. They are cut at standard sweatshirt length, not tunic length, so there is no version of this outfit where the sweater is the only thing covering you.

Getting there in the cold

The problem with a party sweater in December is the twenty minutes before and after, when you are outside in something designed for a heated room.

Polyester sweatshirts are warm indoors and not much use against wind. Plan on a coat you will take off at the door rather than layering something bulky underneath, which changes how the sweater sits and distorts the print.

If the venue has no cloakroom, this is a real consideration. A sweater you have to keep a jacket over all night is a sweater nobody sees.

What you are buying

All designs are $33.99, sizes S through 5XL, printed on polyester with the design running across the whole garment.

Each one is printed after you order, which is why every size is always available. Production time comes before shipping time, so check the current production and shipping times and count backwards from the date you need it.

Common questions

Are these knitted sweaters? No. They are printed polyester sweatshirts in the ugly sweater shape, which is what allows photographic designs rather than knit patterns.

How long are they? Standard sweatshirt length, not tunic length. Worth knowing if you are planning to wear leggings.

Can I wear one to an office party? Depends on the design. The animal and hobby designs are safe; the trompe l'oeil and naughty ones are not, and several Santa designs are ruder than their names suggest. See funny ugly sweater ideas for the full breakdown.

What is the largest size? 5XL on every design.
